Ecuador earthquake appeal

Ecuador earthquake appeal
Wednesday 27 April 2016

Ecuador was hit by 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday 16th April 2016. The aftermath has resulted in over 400 deaths, 200 missing and over 2000 injured and a still unquantifiable monetary value of damage to major infrastructure and private property.

The hardest hit areas are coastal provinces that already face elevated poverty conditions. Additionally the El Niño weather phenomenon will surely usher in steady rainfall in the following weeks. The lack of public infrastructure such as coliseums, stadiums, and the sort has left many sleeping on the street. Structures that are still standing are, however, unstable and could fall at any moment.

In light of these events the Ecuadorian Embassy, the Ecuadorian Student Associations at the Australian National University (ANUES) and the University of Queensland have jointly began a fundraiser to secure financial donations that may then be transferred to the Ecuadorian Red Cross.
