David has taught in the School of Politics and International Relations since the early 1970s. He was often responsible for the First Year course in Political Science (with its emphasis on Australian Politics) and also taught courses on Australian Prime Ministers, Australian Government Administration and Public Policy, Bureaucracy and Public Policy, Executive Government in Western Democracies and Political Psychology. The prize for the best result in Introduction to Politics each year is named after him. He received the Vice-Chancellor's award for Teaching.
