Industry PhD workshop. Lessons from the French CIFRE and ANU PhD programs for developing industry engagement in higher degree research training.

Industry-focussed and industrybased PhD programs are an important means of developing researcher skills in working with and in industry, as well as providing opportunities for long-term industry-research cooperation. Th e French ‘CIFRE’ PhD program, where the government and a host business jointly fund PhD students, has been greatly successful over the past 30 years in developing France as an industrial research leader. Under this program, the PhD students are a contractualised employee of the business and are jointly supervised by the business and an external Government research laboratory.
All of the CIFRE PhDs are coordinated through the French National Association for Research and Technology (ANRT), which allows them to develop support programs for students and businesses to make the most of the CIFRE scholars.

Th is workshop aims to understand the experiences of industry-based and industry-focussed PhD students, both from France and the ANU. It will attempt to understand why the CIFRE program has been so successful and supported by both the French Government and Industry, and what Australia and the ANU might be able to learn about it for developing and further enhancing our own industry PhD programs, including those linked to CRCs. It will also seek to understand the benefi ts and challenges of carrying out an industry-focussed PhD at the ANU under various supervisory confi gurations, in order to compare and contrast the diff erences with the CIFRE program.

Th e interactive workshop will include: a brief outline of the CIFRE system, including opportunities for joint international PhDs (co-tutelles); testimonials from CIFRE and industry-related ANU PhD students; and
an exchange of French and Australian knowledge on the development of industry PhD programs and how to encourage their eff ective implementation in the Australian context. Th e workshop is intended for Australian industry PhD students and supervisors, Australian policy makers and industry research leaders.
