Professor Jacqueline Lo (Director, ANU Centre for European Studies) and Professor Bruce Wilson (Director, EU Centre, RMIT University) were delighted to meet High Representative Federica Mogherini at the European Australian Business Council reception last night, also attended by Igor Driesmans (Member of cabinet HRVP).

In her speech, the High Representative noted that Europe and Australia were “so distant, so close”. Distant in geographic terms but close in values. “We in Europe believe that rules are a guarantee that everybody can play fairly, no matter how big or small, no matter how powerful, no matter how strong. We believe that it is rules that offer equal opportunities for all to compete equally and to build win-win solutions, not zero sum games. This is the European way of doing business, also of doing foreign policy and security policy. And I know that Australia is on the same line.”

The reception followed a joint press release by High Representative Federica Mogherini and Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop MP, announcing discussions held on global developments and agreement on measure to strengthen the EU-Australia partnership.
