ANU Centre for European Studies (ANUCES) staff received the Vice-Chancellor's Staff Excellence Award for Public Policy and Outreach, presented in the Staff Excellence Awards ceremony at University House on 22 November.

The team consisted of ANUCES representatives from across the University: James Cameron, Nicholas Simoes da Silva, Dr Annmarie Elijah, Paul Gretton, Associate Professor Donald Kenyon AM, Professor Jacqueline Lo and Associate Professor Hazel Moir (College of Arts and Social Sciences); Professor Carsten Daugbjerg (College of Asia and the Pacific); Associate Professor Pierre van der Eng (College of Business and Economics); Anne McNaughton (College of Law); and Karen Hussey and Carl Tidemann (College of Science).

The Public Policy and Outreach award recognises University staff for outstanding contributions to public policy formulation and debate, who volunteer their skills and experience and facilitate valuable connections across Australia and internationally.

Receiving the award this year recognises the ANUCES team's consistent high-level performance in informing policy makers and the general public on the European Union and its member states, and the significance of European issues for Australia, in particular, the Brexit referendum and formal moves towards an Australia–EU trade agreement.

This excellent achievement is testament to the Centre's demonstrated contribution to Australian understanding of the EU and to strengthening Australian-European ties. ANUCES contributes to public policy and debate through its extensive program of public events, and its media commentary on current issues. The Centre also hosts regular training and policy briefings for Australian policy makers, while contributing to strengthening European-Australian relations via track two diplomacy initiatives.
