The European Union’s Strategic Relationship with Australia: A method of European Engagement with the Asia-Pacific? The hegemonic status of the West is being undermined by an ongoing shift of strategic influence towards the East. This shift reflects a wider geopolitical transformation of the international system as it enters a new era aptly termed the ‘Asian century.’ This research aims to explore the EU’s strategic relationship with Australia in the context of the Asia-Pacific. While the EU’s role as a strategic actor is commonly confined to its immediate geographic neighbourhood, the research will look beyond Europe’s local environment and investigate the extent of its role as a global actor.
