Professor Swinbank's research has focussed on the farm and food policies of the European Union (EU), particularly its common agricultural policy (CAP) and more recently bioenergy, and the process of trade liberalisation in these products under the auspices of the WTO (World Trade Organization). He has written, lectured and advised extensively on these topics. A list of recent publications can be found here.
In recent years Professor Swinbank has undertaken work for the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), the Commonwealth Secretariat, ICTSD (the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development), IFPRI (the International Food Policy Research Institute), CEPS (the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels), the UK’s Food and Drink Federation (FDF), the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS), the European Parliament, various UK government departments including Defra and Dfid, and Tate & Lyle Sugars. He has advised Select Committees in both Houses of the UK parliament.
Professor Swinbank was a member of the working party chaired by Wyn Grant that prepared a report — The implications of ‘BREXIT’ for UK agriculture — for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. That report, published February 2016, can be accessed here.
Professor Swinbank is also a Past President (2009-10) of the Agricultural Economics Society.
