Kris Deschouwer is Head of the Department of Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium. He has previously taught at the universities of Bergen (Norway), Lausanne (Switzerland), Aix-en-Provence and Lille (France). From 2003 to 2009 he was editor of the European Journal of Political Research.
Kris Deschouwer has worked on political parties and elections, on regionalism and federalism and on the politics of divided societies. He is currently coordinating a research project on political participation and representation in modern democracies (www.partirep.eu). That project includes a survey among members of parliament of 70 statewide and regional assemblies in 15 European countries.
He has also recently set up – with Nicole Bolleyer of Exeter University – a comparative project on the survival chances of new political parties.
Kris Deschouwer’s most recent books are The Politics of Belgium. Governing a divided society (Palgrave / MacMillan 2009) and New parties in Government. In Power for the First Time (Routledge 2008).
