"Indigenous Reconciliation": a conversation between Mexico and Australia

"Indigenous Reconciliation": a conversation between Mexico and Australia

This year, Mexico will memorialize the 500 years of the arrival of Hernan Cortes to the coasts of what is now the territory of Mexico.

Next year marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of Captain James Cook aboard H.M. Bark Endeavour to Australia.

Both anniversaries offer an excellent opportunity to revisit and reframe our respective historical encounters and to discuss many issues related to the indigenous populations, in particular, how to commemorate an historical event that incorporates all the descendants of these histories, and how to have an honest and critical acceptance of a past that not only opens the door to a collective understanding of the present, but also facilitates the development of democratic and tolerant attitudes.
