A Roundtable on Nationalism, Democracy, and the International Politics of Asia

You are warmly invited to the upcoming Roundtable, co-sponsored by the Australian National University's Centre on China in the World and the School of Politics and International Relations.

Friday 31 July, 2pm - 4pm

Roundtable discussion followed by light refreshments.

Jean Martin Room, Beryl Rawson Building - Level 3
13 Ellery Crescent, Australian National University
Acton ACT 2601

This roundtable brings fresh perspectives from across the Indo-Pacific and hard data to bear on some of the vexing challenges currently facing the region.

Top emerging international scholars Eunbin Chung, Jiyoung Ko and Jon Chu, each with exciting new books, are joined by ANU experts to address security and economic risks in the changing political and strategic context of the Indo-Pacific.

Topics addressed include:

  • China’s economic statecraft and its cross-societal impact.
  • China’s maritime security strategy and its impact on regional nationalism.
  • The strength of regional democratic identity and democratic backsliding.
  • Rising nationalism and how this affects the risk of conflict.
  • How public opinion affects the risk of nuclear war.
  • The future for tools of soft power in Asia.
