William Salkeld (he/him) is a philosopher and political theorist working in animal and environmental ethics. He is curious in what the right relations with animals and the more-than-human world are, and how these relations should inform our political institutions. His work tends to adopt a non-ideal approach, thinking about how political theory might guide advocates and practitioners in the real world. Outside of animal and environment ethics, he is also interested in historical injustice and democratic theory.
His PhD dissertation, Representing Animals in Democracy, adopts a non-ideal perspective to animal political representation. It asks how we might represent the interests of animals in democracies given widespread disagreement about the place of animals in politics.
His public-facing work has been published in The Ethics Centre and the Canberra Times. Outside of work, Will spends too much time rock climbing, attempting to play jazz piano, and engaging in political advocacy for animals.
