Navigating Parliamentary Decision Making

How to navigate federal parliamentary policy processes from a public service perspective - Executive Short Course

 

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST DEADLINE:  5 Nov 2024 - 6pm

This useful course is essential for any aspiring senior leader who wants to swiftly gain an advanced understanding of managing parliamentary and political decision-making from a public service viewpoint. The course, facilitated by the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Professor the Hon. Tony Smith, will give you an inside look at how political and parliamentary decisions are made through lectures and interviews with past and present key leaders and people interested in policy results. Upon completion, you will have acquired specialist knowledge and understanding that no other course can provide, positioning you to be the most effective public service leader in the future.



Who should take part?

This course is designed for those at the APS Executive Level 1 to SES Band 1.

The Experience 

Participants will learn and engage with key decision-makers and gain unique insights from: 

  • Former ministerial staff and key independent Members or Senators  

  • The passionate issue-engaged Member or Senator  

  • Parliamentary committees and Shadow ministers  

  • Industry associations and Lobbyists  

  • Former and current Ministers and Leaders

  • Key media commentators, columnists and opinion shapers 

  • Key Officers and Elected Officials responsible for transparency, accountability and oversight. 

 

Indicative timetable for the expression of interest (EOI) application and assessment process:

  • EOI opens on 24 September 2024
  • EOI will close at 6 pm, 5 November 2024
  • Successful applicants will be notified by email on 8 November 2024, and provided with a payment link
  • Final registration for successful applicants will close at 6 pm, 15 November 2024.

 

Cost: $7,920.00 (GST included) - For information about enrolment, refunds or cancellation, please refer to the Terms.

Certificate: A certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the course, but please note this Executive Short Course is not within the Australian Qualifications Framework. For more information, please refer to the ANU professional and short course policy

The course will start and finish with face-to-face sessions hosted in the Research School of Social Sciences Building at the ANU.

It will include a unique in-person experience at Parliament House and have accessible virtual sessions in between.

Executive Short Courses

In respect of these Terms and Conditions, “the University” and "the ANU" refer to the Australian National University, and “you” refers to the student/enrolee.

By enrolling in an executive short course you are agreeing that you:

Enrolment

  • The ANU School of Politics & International Relations (SPIR) intends to run the program as advertised but reserves the right to change courses and program titles, fees, dates, venues, and delivery methods if required.
  • SPIR reserves the right to cancel the course due to insufficient numbers.
  • Executive short courses are designed for adults. Enrolees must be at least 18 years of age at the time of enrolment.
  • Applicants are responsible for ensuring they have the assumed knowledge specified when enrolling.
  • Places in executive short courses will be allocated in order of enrolment or by application in cases where selection criteria apply.
  • Acceptance of enrolment in a professional learning course is at the absolute discretion of the ANU.
  • The University reserves the right to vary an enrolment. Decisions to vary an enrolment are at the absolute discretion of the ANU.
  • Courses are run subject to minimum enrolment numbers being met.
  • A minimum of 5 (five) business days’ notice will be given if a course is to be cancelled.

Payment

  • Payment is required at time of enrolment.
  • Payment may be made by Mastercard, Visa or by requesting an invoice at the time of enrolment.

Refunds

  • If enrolment is cancelled up to 10 (ten) business days prior to commencement of the course, a full refund will be provided.
  • Please choose carefully, as we do not offer a refund if you change your mind or find yourself unable to attend after this time period.
  • If you are unable to complete the course, in exceptional circumstances (including severe ill-health or on compassionate grounds), you can apply to withdraw with full refund with relevant documentation. The application must be made prior to course end date.
  • Application to withdraw from a course with a refund must be made in writing by emailing events.rsss@anu.edu.au.

Completion

Upon satisfactory completion of a course:

  • A Certificate of completion will be issued
  • This executive short course is not included in the Australian Qualifications Framework qualification.
