In a political environment increasingly defined by rapid information dissemination, digital communication, and data proliferation, Quantitative Text Analysis (QTA) has emerged as an essential tool for political scientists. By enabling robust and systematic analysis of political texts such as parliamentary speeches, party manifestos, and social media interactions, QTA provides researchers with powerful methods to uncover patterns, sentiments, and underlying themes shaping political discourse and behaviour.

This one-day workshop is dedicated to equipping advanced students and early career researchers with the practical skills and theoretical insights necessary to employ text analysis methodologies effectively in addressing contemporary political questions.

Designed specifically for HDR students and early career researchers, this workshop aims to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application in political text analysis. We encourage applications from historically underrepresented groups, including women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars, first-generation students, ethnic minorities, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Program:

The workshop will feature three comprehensive sessions led by experienced scholars:

  • Introduction to Quantitative Text Analysis - Dr. Charles Miller (ANU)
  • Computational Analysis of Political Text (Automated Approaches) - Dr. Seraphine Maerz (University of Melbourne)
  • Interactive Applied Sessions - Coordinated by Dr. Constanza Sanhueza Petrarca (ANU) and Dr. Thiago Nascimento da Silva (ANU)

Expression of Interest Deadline: May 5, 2025.

Participants will be notified by May 9, 2025.

This event is organised by the ANU School of Politics & International Relations and the Quantitative Methods Research Group of the Australian Political Studies Association (AusPSA).
